Municipal Office

COMMISSIONING AND CERTIFICATION OF DOCUMENTS

Commissioner of Oaths

Staff of the Municipal Clerk’s office may act as a Commissioner of Oaths to witness signatures on a variety of documents. Examples of documents commissioned by the Municipal Clerk’s Department are:

  • Affidavits
  • Statutory Declarations
  • Vehicle Transfers
  • Pension Forms

The document should be completed and ready for signature.

  • Do not sign the declaration on the form before you present it for commissioning
  • You must provide photo identification at the time of signing the document.

The Commissioner of Oaths will have you attest to the contents of the document and sign the document in their presence.  The Commissioner of Oaths does not certify that the statement is true, only that an Oath has been administered.  We only witness signatures on documents - we do not review or approve the content of documents.  No legal advice is given during a Commissioning of Oath.

In other Provinces or countries, the term “notarized” is often interchanged with the term “Commissioner of Oaths”.  Please contact the Municipal Clerk’s office if you require clarification.  The Township of Scugog does not offer the services of a Notary Public.  To have a document commissioned, the person(s) making the statement must bring the document to the Municipal Clerk’s office.

Staff in the Municipal Clerk’s Department are able to provide this service during regular office hours.  Appointments are not necessary.  The fee for Commissioning of documents is $22.60 (including HST).  Foreign pensions (or “life pension statements”) are commissioned at no charge.

NOTE:

  • Commissioners will not sign Wills, Powers of Attorney, Divorce, Separation, Custody, Theft, Financial or Real Estate related documents.
  • We reserve the right to refuse commissioning services of any document.

Certification of Documents

When you are asked to submit documents to government, insurance companies or banking institutions, you may require "certified copies" of your papers such as a birth certificate or marriage certificate. If you need certified copies of any documents, Staff in the Municipal Clerk’s Department are able to provide this service during regular office hours.  Appointments are not necessary.

The fee for this service is $20.00.
