COVID-19 Update #12: Sale of fireworks in Scugog by essential business locations will be permitted. Public or neighbourhood firework displays are not permitted

Posted On Wednesday May 06, 2020

A report regarding the sale of fireworks in Scugog was brought forward on Monday, May 4, 2020. Fire Chief Mark Berney outlined that the sale of fireworks from non-essential businesses like trailers is prohibited. “Fireworks may be sold locally by essential business locations, however, we will not be authorizing permits for the typical trailer or road side establishment here in Scugog.” He added, “Those trailers are not deemed an essential business by the province and therefore, will not be issued a permit.”

 Ontario exercised its authority under Subsection 7.0.2 (4) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act with a number of Orders including:

  • Prohibiting Organized Public Events, Certain Gatherings, March 28, 2020;
  • Requiring the Closure of Outdoor Recreational Amenities, March 28, 2020;
  • Requiring the Closure of Places of Non-Essential Businesses, April 3, 2020;

In keeping with the order, staff will not be licensing non-essential businesses to sell fireworks. As well, applications for a Fireworks Display Permit will not be approved.

“On a daily basis the Emergency Control Group evaluates the public health information, provincial orders and makes recommendations for the safety of our community,” said Chief Berney. “To this end, neighbourhood gatherings for fireworks will not be permitted.”

Private backyard firework displays with your immediate household family will be allowed. Consumers considering private backyard firework displays are encouraged to respect their neighbours and practice safe handling of fireworks including exercising a highest regard for fire safety.

Staff will refund any licenses and permits issued prior to the issuance of the Provincial Orders.
