Both accessory and temporary structures must meet the regulations of the Township Zoning By-law. Regulations for these types of structures include:

  • Building size
  • Lot coverage
  • Height (temporary structures)
  • Location
  • Use of building (accessory structures)

All structures in the Township of Scugog must also meet the regulations of the Township Property Standards By-law, such as:

  • Being structurally sound
  • Being in good repair

Accessory structures

Accessory structures include:

  • Detached garages
  • Tool sheds
  • Other detached structures with a specific use

Temporary structures

Temporary structures (or portable garages) are often constructed of metal poles with a fabric covering, and are not permanently affixed to the ground. The Ontario Building Code considers this type of structure to be a "tent" and doesn't require a building permit if:

  • The size of the structure is not more than 60 m2 (646 ft2);
  • The structure does not attach to a building;
  • The structure is placed more than 3 m (10 ft) from other structures.
