$10,000 Raised for the Scugog Shores Museum Village Through 53rd Annual Canoe the Nonquon

On Saturday, June 3, 2023, the Scugog Shores Museum hosted the 53rd Annual Canoe the Nonquon event. 

Participants of all ages and abilities paddled the course of the twisty Nonquon River. A total of 134 participants in 92 vessels joined the race this year with a record-breaking number of Friday night registrants.  

This annual event is a fundraiser for the Scugog Shores Museum Village, and through sponsorships, donations and pledges the event raised $10, 000.00 for the Scugog Shores Museum Village. Thank you to the Scugog community for supporting this event.  

The race wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of staff, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners. We would like to thank our sponsors, Durham Tourism, Brock’s Department Store and Cozzy Electric, as well as our community partners, Two Blokes Cider, the Port Perry Marina, Scugog Fire Department, Port Perry Lions Club and Signworks. We also want to thank the volunteers and staff that assisted at various checkpoint locations and headquarters to ensure all aspects of the event ran smoothly.

  • Average age of participants: 47 
  • Oldest participant: 82 
  • Youngest participant: 6 
  • Vessels with first-time competitors: 38 
  • Farthest distance participant travelled to compete: North Bay  

Special awards and recognition:  

  • Jack Kane Memorial Award: Audrey Creer for child showing most effort 
  • Allene Kane Memorial Award: Fred Frost for most memorable racer 
  • Most Funds Raised: Kristen and Mark Lawrence

We thank everyone for their participation and support of the Scugog Shores Museum Village. The Village is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for tours until September 1, 2023. You can also visit for special events and programs throughout the summer including Theatre on the Ridge performances.
