Heritage

Section 27 of the Ontario Heritage Act states that the municipal clerk shall keep a register of properties that are of cultural heritage value in the municipality. These local, publicly accessible registers contain information about all properties designated under sections 29 or 41 of the act. They may also include a list of properties that have not been designated but that the municipality has indicated has cultural heritage value. They are often referred to as “listed properties.”

All property owners in the Downtown Port Perry Heritage Conservation District are now eligible to apply for a Heritage Conservation District Grant. This program has been approved by Council in the amount of $30,000. This Program is designed to encourage the restoration and improvement of building facades in the Heritage Conservation District.  Landowners of either contributing and/or non-contributing buildings in the District are eligible to apply. 

The assistance is in the form of a 50/50 matching grant, paid upon completion of the previously approved work. Approved applicants who undertake at least $500 in improvements are eligible for a grant of up to 50% of the costs with a maximum limit of $10,000 per property for eligible work.  Buildings identified as heritage structures would be eligible for an additional $5,000 in matching grant assistance. 

To be eligible for a Heritage Grant for consideration in 2024, draft applications including scope of the work must be received prior to Council Meeting date (*).  Landowners are required to contact Christy Harrison at grants@scugog.ca to submit the draft proposal and to obtain comments/input from the Township’s Heritage Advisory Committee. Please note all applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Heritage committee will review the proposal(s) and provide applicants with comments/input shortly thereafter. Secondly, an official application will be provided to the applicant to complete and must include two (2) contractor quotes and professional drawings. The Committee will review the final applications and recommendations will be forwarded to Council for their review and consideration. Applicants will be contacted regarding the status of their application Friday following Council Meeting and councils' approvals.

The Township of Scugog has two Heritage Plaque Programs to promote heritage buildings and sites. these programs are a great way for the community and visitors to appreciate our history and cultural heritage.
