Introducing Mike Matthews as New Scugog Fire Chief

Scugog – The Township of Scugog recently conducted recruitment for the position of Fire Chief within Scugog Fire and Emergency Services. This position oversees and directs the operations of Fire Services while supporting the Township’s strategic priorities and overseeing emergency management.

We are proud to announce that Mike Matthews has been selected as our new Fire Chief!

Fire Chief Mike Matthews started his career in September 1991 as a volunteer firefighter for the Whitby Fire Department. For 31 years he served this community, progressing through the ranks to the position of Deputy Chief, and for a short time serving as Acting Fire Chief. In 2022, he took the opportunity to become the Deputy Chief for Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service. He also began serving Scugog as a volunteer firefighter in December 2020. When the position of Fire Chief for the Township of Scugog became available, it was an opportunity that he had been hoping for. Now in this position, he will be putting his efforts in to building a modern progressive Fire Service that is ready to respond to the needs of the community.

Fire Chief Matthews provided these comments, "As community leaders in fire safety and emergency preparedness, we are committed to protecting the lives and property of our residents. Our mission goes beyond responding to emergencies; it's about educating and empowering the community to prevent them in the first place. Together, we can build a safer, more resilient future for everyone."

"It is truly an honor to lead the dedicated team at Scugog Fire. Every day, I am inspired by their courage, commitment, and passion for serving our community. Together, we stand ready to respond, protect, and make a difference in the lives of those we serve, and I am proud to be part of such an exceptional organization."
