Introducing NEW interactive Budget Builder tool

Let us know your community priorities to help shape the 2027 Scugog budget

Scugog - The Township of Scugog is preparing the 2027 budget and wants to hear from residents and property owners about their budget priorities. Scugog provides programs and services to the community based on an annual Operating and Capital budget. While drafting these budgets, staff always consider the needs of the community, economic pressures and drivers, growth, services to residents, and engineering priorities for infrastructure and asset management.

Long term sustainability continues to be one of our main goals and as with many other municipalities across Canada, the infrastructure deficit continues to be a major issue that we must continue to address. Dedicated levies have provided the Township the means to tackle many large-scale infrastructure projects. Solid budget planning will continue to allow for upgrades to existing roads, bridges, sidewalks, parks, playgrounds, technology upgrades, and more serving the Scugog community.

Input from the community is a vital part of the budget planning process. This year, we are introducing a new way to engage! Through our Budget project page, users can not only submit a survey with their input and ideas for the budget but also try out our new interactive Capital and Operating budget builders! Participants are given a total budget fund that must be allocated to different areas/departments. Weigh which are most important to you and how much of the budget you’d like to spend on each category without going over-budget. Responses will be analyzed and used to determine which categories are most important to the community when building the 2027 budget.

The project page also provides information on how a municipal budget is built, the budget process timeline, budget facts, Frequently Asked Questions, and a comment form for you to ask questions. Scugog Finance staff are monitoring the site and will respond to questions submitted.

As with last year’s public consultation, we will be hosting three town hall meetings to discuss the budget. These meetings will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. the following dates and locations:

  • July 20 – Greenbank Hall
  • July 21 – Scugog Library
  • July 22 – Nestleton Hall

Quote:

“This year, as part of the 2027 budget preparations, I have asked staff to prioritize maintaining services with a budget increase no greater than the current Consumer Price Index, prioritize the completion of capital projects identified in the forecast, focus on asset management, ensuring asset replacement is absolutely required before it is pursued, and develop a 10-year capital forecast for future budgets," said Township of Scugog Mayor Wilma Wotten. "We want to keep costs to the resident as low as we can, and ensure our assets and infrastructure are in proper shape without unnecessary expenses.”

While this budget is being drafted and presented during the 2022-26 Term of Council, the post-election Council will have the opportunity to review and veto the decision should that be their preference.
