Take Notice that the Council of the Township of Scugog, on March 23, 2026, passed a resolution of intent to designate the property at 3490 Highway 7A, Caesarea, Ontario, as a property of cultural heritage value or interest under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, (the Act).
Heritage Value Statement
3490 Highway 7A, Caesarea, Ontario (Caesar Cemetery)
The Caesar Cemetery is a small rural cemetery found on the west side of Highway 7A between the villages of Blackstock and Caesarea in the old Township of Cartwright, now part of Scugog Township. The cemetery consists of 33 gravestones that mark the final resting place of 77
individuals who passed away in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Statement of Cultural Heritage Value
The Caesar Cemetery has cultural heritage value as small rural Ontario burial place, and for providing insight into the names and lives of the early settlers of Cartwright Township.
The Caesar Cemetery is characterized by a naturalistic setting and the use of markers to perpetuate the memory of the individuals buried there.
Description of Heritage Attributes
Key attributes of the Caesar Cemetery that reflect its value as a link to the early history of Cartwright and Scugog Township and as an example of a small 19th century rural village cemetery are:

Its original stone markers and monuments and surviving inscriptions;

The variety of styles, materials and symbolism represented in the markers and monuments;

The range of size and sophistication of markers from modest to elaborate;

Its location, orientation and dimensions;

Its naturalistic setting;

Any person may, on or before the 15 of June 2026, send by registered mail or deliver the Clerk, Notice of Objection to the proposed designation, together with a statement of their reasons of the objection and all relevant facts. If a Notice of Objection is received, the Council of the Township of Scugog will consider the objection on or before the 14 of September 2026.
If no objection is received within the designated period, Council may consider and pass a By-Law designating the property at 3490 Highway 7A, Caesarea, Ontario, under Part IV of the Act.
