Council Highlights - June 23, 2025

Scugog – Township of Scugog Council held a public Council Meeting on June 23. The meeting covered a variety of topics, please see the highlights below:

Senior of the Year

Scugog Council awarded resident Ken Koury with the prestigious Senior of the Year award. Mayor Wilma Wotten announced Mr. Ken Koury as the recipient of the 2025 Senior of the Year Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the community.

Mr. Koury graciously accepted the honour and expressed his appreciation, highlighting the kindness and support of the Scugog community. You can view the award recognition around the 1:40:30 mark of the June 23 Council Meeting livestream recording.

The Ontario Senior of the Year Award gives each municipality in Ontario the opportunity to honour one outstanding local Ontarian who has enriched the social, cultural or civic life of their community

Alternative Voting Methods

The Township is expanding voting options for the 2026 municipal election to make it easier and more convenient for everyone to have their say. This includes more advanced voting days and online voting.

Amended Property Standards

The Township has introduced additional property maintenance standards to help safeguard designated heritage properties from demolition by neglect. These measures aim to ensure that historic buildings are properly maintained and preserved for generations to come

Saltwater pollution

Scugog Council supported a motion by Whitchurch-Stouffville to work with key stakeholders to develop limited liability legislation, including contractor training, and provincially enforced standards for snow and ice management. The endorsement calls on the province to create and fund an expert stakeholder advisory committee to advise the province and municipalities on the best way to protect freshwater ecosystems and drinking water from salt pollution. We continue to commit to reducing road salt use as much as possible while meeting local service levels and maintaining road and sidewalk safety.

Capital Project Status Report

Council has reviewed the Capital Closing Report as of April 30, 2025, and officially closed 27 capital projects, such as road and sidewalk rehabilitation projects and infrastructure improvements within the Township.
