Durham Region municipalities are once again coming together for Hunger Action Month to raise awareness and collect food and monetary donations to fight hunger in the community.

Food insecurity doesn’t always look the way you might expect. It can affect anyone - a neighbour, coworker, senior, or family struggling to keep up with the rising cost of everyday essentials.

The need across Durham remains significant. Over 880,000 visits were made to a food program in Feed the Need in Durham’s network of 70 community food programs last year, highlighting the important role emergency food support continues to play across the region.

From September 9 to October 5, residents, businesses, and community groups can help by donating non-perishable food at participating locations across Durham or by making a monetary donation online. In Scugog, we will be collecting non-perishable food items at the Municipal Office, 181 Perry Street, and Scugog Community Recreation Centre, 1655 Reach Street, on behalf of Operation Scugog. Any items placed in the collection bins at these locations will be delivered to Operation Scugog by Township staff.

Donations will support Feed the Need in Durham and participating community food programs, helping get food and other essential items to people who need them.

Make your donation go further: For every $1 donated, Feed the Need in Durham can collect, store and distribute two meals and other needed products. Donate online.

Community Care Durham

Community Care Durham (CCD) provides care and support related to aging, physical and mental health, for older adults and their caregivers.

Community Living Durham North provides support to people who have intellectual disabilities. Available services include:

Housing and Homelessness Support Program (HHSP)

The Housing and Homelessness Support Program (HHSP) assists in supporting individuals and families who are homeless and or at a risk of homelessness. The Housing and Homelessness Program supports those who are considered low income in the Scugog, Brock, and Uxbridge Townships.

The Housing and Homelessness Support Program offers the following wrap around services:

Support to find affordable housing
Connecting Tenants with Landlords
Mediating issues between landlords and tenants
Applying for subsidies such as reduced hydro bills, last month’s rent, and rent and utility arrears
Arranging direct payment options from social assistance to landlords
Partnering with different agencies to meet your needs
Harm reduction outreach program includes injection and smoking supplies, education, referrals, and advocacy supports
Rent smart training

North House

North House assists the most vulnerable in the Townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge through a spectrum of housing supports to help them get back on their feet and into a safe, stable home.

North House provides the following services:

Assistance with housing search
Provide access to stability funds for rent and utility arrears, last month’s rent and moving costs
Assistance with rental applications for market and rent-geared-to-income housing
Landlord and Tenant Board support
Referrals to government and community resources
Eviction prevention through mediation with landlords
Navigation of the Residential Tenancy Actwith tenants and landlords
Income tax preparation
D. replacement
Advocacy and referral for the Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program
Referral to an emergency shelter
Assistance with the Ontario Electricity Support Program and the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program applications
