Please note, our Customer Service Relations (CRM) portal is now under a new platform. Any residents who have created an account for MyScugogConnected, our 311 service, will need to create a new account to use our new portal, powered by CityWide.

Personal information included with by-law complaints is protected by to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protections of Privacy Act.

File a complaint

The Chief Building Official looks into complaints they receive and confirms they are valid. Once a Building By-law (45-18) violation is confirmed, a Building Official seek voluntary compliance with our Building By-law by issuing a notice.  If this does not work, the next step includes an Order to Comply and or legal charges.

Written complaints must be forwarded to the municipality; staff will not initiate an investigation without first receiving the complaint in writing.

As of January 3, for new concerns/complaints, The Township of Scugog is pleased to offer residents Cloudpermit - an online system to submit concerns/complaints. Please do not start a new concern if you have one in progress as they follow the current priority process. Please be patient while we make these improvements to serve you better.

Once a by-law violation is confirmed, the By-law Enforcement Office will strive to obtain voluntary compliance with our by-laws through public education, and mediation. If this does not work, the next step includes a Notice, an Order Requiring Compliance or legal charges.

A permit is required for all burning in Scugog. Residents apply for recreational, general, oversize and agricultural burn permits online through our web portal.

Our Fire Prevention Officer enforces the Ontario Fire Code. It is the responsibility of the homeowner, business owner, building owner, etc. to ensure that a building is in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code at all times. When a violation of the Ontario Fire Code is observed by the Fire Department, the owner may be charged.

If you have a fire safety concern, you can request a complaint inspection using the form below. All personal information will remain confidential.

You can also request a general fire safety inspection as required for licensing, real estate transactions or to simply confirm that your building is in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code. Fees may apply for requested inspections.

If, while attending your residence, Scugog Fire and Emergency Services observed contravention(s) of the Ontario Fire Code and provided you with an Assessment form, you may use the declaration form below to acknowledge that the remedial work noted on the Assessment Form has been completed.

This form should only be completed if you have been in contact with the Fire Prevention Officer and confirmed the requirements outlined on the Assessment Form. If you have any questions about this form, please contact Fire Prevention at 905-985-2384.

The Mayor is pleased to issue congratulatory letters and certificates to residents of the Township of Scugog who are celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary. We are also happy to issue congratulatory letters and certificate for businesses celebrating a grand opening or milestone anniversary.

The Township of Scugog issues proclamations (ceremonial document) designating a special day, week or month in recognition of the efforts and commitments of an event or organization that enhances our community.

Proclamations are issued by the Mayor in an effort to recognize efforts of public awareness campaigns, charitable fundraising campaigns, arts and cultural celebrations. Organizations do not have exclusive rights to the day, week or month of their proclamation.

Proclamation requests can be submitted through our online form.

Disclaimer

Proclamation requests are reviewed and approved based on the Township of Scugog Proclamations Policy. The policy outlines criteria and guidelines that are to be followed. Not all proclamation requests are approved. Proclamations requests will not be issued for:

  • Matters of political controversy, religious beliefs, individual conviction,
  • promotion of business, commercial enterprise or campaigns intended for profit-making purposes
  • Campaigns or events contrary to law, Municipal policies or By-laws
  • Events or organizations with no direct interest or relationship with the Township

Submit information about issues in Township of Scugog parks, playgrounds, and trails. Users can detail exact location of the issue, provide information on what needs to be addressed, and upload photos of the area.

The Township of Scugog has a number of facilities available for you to visit or rent for various events and activities. A listing of Township-owned as well as community-owned facilities can be found through our Book or Rent a Facility page.

If you already know which facility you are looking to rent, rental requests can be submitted through our online form.

 

All facility renters and third parties (i.e. vendors, caterers, performers, etc.) are required to carry liability insurance when using a Township owned or operated facility or community hall. Insurance requirements vary based on the type of rental and activities taking place. All renters must list the Township of Scugog as an additional insured with a minimum coverage of two million dollars on their insurance, or five million for events with alcohol.

If the renter already has the above listed coverage, it can be used for the event so long as it covers the relevant dates and times, and that the Township of Scugog is listed as additional insured.

If you do not already have coverage, it can be acquired through InstantRisk's online portal.

The Township of Scugog offers a variety of recreation available to all ages. Interested parties can view available programs and reserve spots through our recreation pages.

Submit information about issues in Township of Scugog roads and sidewalks. Users can detail exact location of the issue, provide information on what needs to be addressed, and upload photos of the area.

Public and private events have various requirements and permits depending on the type, size, location, and more. Event hosts are encouraged to view our Special Event Planning Guide to familiarize with all requirements before the event.

Hosts must also acquire a Special Event Permit. Permit requests can be submitted through our Special Event Permits page. Please note, there are separate forms for events on public property and those on private property.

A compliment is an expression of satisfaction for a Township of Scugog service, program, facility, or staff member.

What is a complaint?

A complaint is an expression of dissatisfaction related to a Township of Scugog program, service facility, staff member. It is based on the citizen’s belief that the Township has not provided a satisfactory service experience at the point of service delivery and a response or resolution is expected. 

Filing a Complaint

In order to file a formal complaint to the Township, you will be asked to provide the following information:

  • Contact details of the complainant
  • Details of what happened, including date, time, location and who was involved
  • What kind of resolution is being sought?

Making a claim against a municipality 

If you believe that the Township of Scugog has been negligent in its maintenance of municipal facilities, roads, sidewalks, storm sewers, or parks, which has caused you injury or damage to your property, you can file a notice of claim against the Township of Scugog. 

What to consider when making a claim 

We recommend you consult your insurance company or insurance representative first, for advice on how to deal with your injury or damage. Your insurance coverage may be more extensive than what you can recover from the municipality.

If your insurer believes the Township of Scugog is responsible for your damages, they may seek compensation against the Township of Scugog on your behalf.

The Township of Scugog only provides consideration of your claim if it is legally responsible for your damage. 

Limitations and timelines 

There may be limitation periods and other procedural timelines that apply to your claim. You should consult your own legal counsel or insurer as required. 

Notice of understanding 

The use of profanity, abuse, threats, or bullying may result in the examiner, independent adjuster or municipal staff assigned to the claim being unable to provide any further contact, support, or consideration of your claim.
