Council Highlights – April 28, 2025

Scugog – Township of Scugog Council held a public Council Meeting this week, April 28. The meeting covered a variety of topics, please see the highlights below:

  • In support of tourism and special events, Council has approved funding for additional waste collection in the downtown on weekends this summer between Victoria Day weekend and Thanksgiving.
  • Council has approved the staff report to award the reconstruction of Union Avenue. Construction is expected to commence at the end of May, and additional details will be communicated to the public. 
  • In support of arts and culture, Council has committed $12,000 towards the Scugog Council of the Arts for 2025 and their initiatives like Culture Days and the Scugog Studio Tour.
  • Council received a presentation from WSP Canada on behalf of Durham Region regarding agricultural-related and on-farm diversified uses. Staff will present the draft official plan and zoning bylaw amendments to implement the recommendations. These will be presented at a future statutory public meeting.   • The Township of Scugog Budget timeline has been set for the 2026 budget. The capital and operating budgets will be combined as part of the consideration. Public consultation will begin in summer 2025.
  • Scugog Council exercised its ability to discuss lands owned by the Township through s.239(2)(c) of the Municipal Act, 2001. During the closed session, Council voted to defer a decision for three months regarding the Port Perry Agricultural Society’s request to renew the lease for the Port Perry Fairgrounds, which is set to expire in June 2026. Council directed staff to engage with the Port Perry Agricultural Society during this time and facilitate a collaborative discussion about the future of the Fairgrounds and their lease renewal request. This portion of the meeting begins around the 17:45 mark.
